eBay pulls plug on PS3 auctionsOctober 17, 2006, posted by vip
Previously, hours after retailers including GameStop opened their doors for a limited number of pre-orders, the pre-ordered console owners were already advertising them for re-sale, all at an inflated price, of course.
Although around 20 adverts were found with the Web site's search for 'PS3' at the time of going to press, no bids had been made, and when viewers try to click through to the advert, they were instead re-directed to an "Invalid item" page, the eBay equivalent of a 404.
"This listing is unavailable." The Web page reads. "If the listing was removed by eBay, consider it canceled."
eBay's policy on pre-sale listings had previously been something of a grey area. Although, according to the rules and policy information on its Web site, Pre-sales are in fact, permitted to be sold, there are certain restrictions.
The main restriction is that the item must be available within 30 days of the date of purchase. So PS3 pre-order auctions that finish in the next few days would technically be allowed by the company, since the consoles are shipping out in the US on the November 17.
However, it is likely that what caused eBay to pull the plug, is its policy on re-selling items that the buyer has not paid the full price for the console and therefore does not actually own. Merely putting down a $100 deposit at retail stores like GameStop, while guaranteeing the holder of the receipt a console on November 17, does not actually put the console in their possession, therefore not entitling them to sell it on. Another reason could be that although owning the receipt means the seller has paid a $100 deposit, it does not mean that they are obliged to pay the balance and buy the console.
